A result of two years of research, analysis, and writing, our new book Primarium: Handwriting education across cultures and continents is a pioneering effort to understand the ways in which Latin-based handwriting is taught around the world. The core of this volume is original research that provides an overview of the handwriting education landscape in 40 countries, along with a close look at the particular styles and approaches employed in each.
Much more thorough than a cursory snapshot, Primarium lays the groundwork for additional research and understanding to be built on top, as well as providing comparative teaching models and letter shapes. The book includes discussions of cultural influences, educational reforms, and history on the methods currently used without judgment; it is a presentation rather than declaration. Project leaders Pooja Saxena and José Scaglione have written insightful essays bringing all these threads together to harmonise Primarium’s in-depth nature with its easily understood text and graphics.
