Veronika Burian was invited by Cadson Demak and the Goethe Institute Thailand to hold a workshop and give one of the keynote presentation at the 6th edition of BITS, a typographic symposium in Bangkok.
The second day was full of different short 2-hour workshops related to type design, calligraphy and typography. Veronika Burian’s presented an introduction to latin type design giving an overview of basics, such as the interplay between black&white, spacing, counter shapes and optical adjustments. Students were asked to do some sketching exercises, experimenting with three parameters (letter width, x-height, stem thickness), combine them and start to develop their own design. The process aims to jumpstart both beginners and amateurs into alphabet-drawing. The experience level of the 12 students varied from beginner to inter-mediate in Latin type design. Despite the very short time available, some students explored various design options including some italics.
