Manau Quellec

2025 winner: Newz by Manau Quellec
Congratulations to this year’s scholarship winner, Manau Quellec and his Newz font family! “Newz is a powerhouse editorial type family,” says TypeTogether co-founder Veronika Burian, “that demonstrates strong potential both conceptually and in its quality of execution and craftsmanship.” José Scaglione effused, “It looks so good, it makes me want to go into the newsprint publishing business!”

The rest of the TypeTogether team had this to say about Newz: “We love the demi-slab style with quite a bit of character across all weights. The use of vertical serifs is powerful, yet the forms manage to shed the ornamentation naturally and effectively in its sans version. One main aspect is its versatility. Newz offers the strength of vertical serifs, working equally well for refined settings and attention-grabbing headlines. Some of the medium and wide slab weights remind us of a Western style, which is great for posters and branding. The italic complements the text well, with expressive contrast against the sturdy uprights. The sans is very beautiful, perhaps even stronger than the slab, and some of its contradictory traits (like abrupt reversed cuts on ascenders) contribute to creating a captivating rhythm in word and text formation.”

Manau Quellec & NEWZ (WIP)

Originally from Créteil in the eastern suburbs of Paris, Manau Quellec studied graphic design and editorial practices at Ésad Amiens, where he also gained a foundation in type design. His education allowed him to experience diverse contexts, including studying at Bauhaus University in Germany, working at Oaza Studio and Publishing House in Zagreb, and interning remotely at Contrast Foundry during the EsadType postgraduate programme. Passionate about newspaper typography, Anglo-Saxon tabloids, and British billboards, Manau’s typeface Newz creates a transgenerational design, drawing from 18th century English press canons while embracing early 21st century popular culture.

Each of the Gerard Unger Scholarship published typefaces have won awards, including the TDC Certificate of Excellence, D&AD award, ISTD awards, and ED-Awards, among others globally.

PARTICIPANTS

This year we received 49 submissions from 47 designers living all over the world — representing 27 schools in 16 countries, and two in hybrid mode (online + in-person). Thirty-one of the families were single scripts and 18 were multiscript, showcasing nine different scripts (Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Cyrillic, Devanagari, Greek, Hangeul, Hebrew, and Latin).

Merits

More than just the winner, we had some amazing submissions that are worthy of significant recognition and a little something extra from the team. The four promising typeface projects receiving TypeTogether’s merit award are (alphabetically): Aksan by Yaprak Buse Çağlar, Manik by Arnab Chakraborty, Venusville by Lee Qiu Wen, and Zofia by Agnieszka Drozd.

These merit winners will be receiving a copy of our book, Building ligatures: The power of type, and Veronika and José will reach out to them soon to offer their insights on taking their projects to the next level. Congratulations to these winners!

Aksan

Yaprak Buse Çağlar
Yaprak Buse comes from İstanbul, Türkiye. After completing her bachelor’s degree, she participated in TypeParis ’22, then attended EsadType, and just acquired her master’s degree at Ésad Amiens. During her studies, Yaprak was fascinated by the process of creating typefaces for editorial use based on linguistic research while combining ornamental features. She plans to continue her type journey in Atelier National Recherche Typographie (ANRT), Renouveau project. When she isn’t busy crafting letters, Yaprak enjoys solving Sudoku puzzles, exploring museums, and painting watercolors.

Arnab Chakraborty
A type design student at EsadType (2023–25), Arnab Chakraborty specialises in multiscript typography with a focus on Latin, Bengali, and Devanagari. With a background in Architecture, his research-oriented approach helps him explore the interplay between structurally diverse scripts in his works. He is passionate about developing culturally sensitive typefaces and is currently expanding his skills in font production and technology.
