Beat Film Festival 2018

July 2020

Maiola in use in the Beat Film Festival edition of 2018.

The Beat Film Festival, founded in 2010, is one of the largest film festivals in Russia focused on high-profile documentary films about current events from the world of music, contemporary art, media, street culture, sports, and new technologies. Its mission is to create a cultural agenda for the residents of Moscow and to bring the genre of the documentary film to larger audiences.

The identity and the posters for the ninth edition of Beat Film Festival were designed by Brazilian art director Ricardo d’Avila. He needed a typeface that would fit the project brief in terms of style and aesthetics, but, being a Russian festival, it was imperative that the typeface would also support Cyrillic. According to d’Avila, “This is where Maiola saved my life,” since it not only matched the brief, but also included Maiola Cyrillic.

The posters were selected as part of the permanent collection of the new Poster House in New York, the first museum dedicated to posters in America, and they were awarded bronze by the 2018 Russian Art Directors Club in the Print & Outdoor category.
