Knock, Knock: Alverata calling

March 2024

Alverata has been used in opening credits for M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock At The Cabin.

Knock At The Cabin, the 2023 movie directed by M Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Old), is a thriller about a blended family vacationing at a remote cabin, when they are taken hostage by four armed strangers. The visitors, led by Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, Dune), demand they make an unthinkable choice: save their family or save humanity. The movie is based on the novel The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul G. Tremblay.

The opening credits use Dr Gerard Unger’s Alverata, a typeface with roots in the Romanesque, but able to blend seamlessly into a wide range of environments and tones. It pairs equally well in subjects from the medieval to the modern, and from regal period pieces and thrillers to dramas of high-intensity or slow-burn tension.

Alverata is Dr Gerard Unger’s resolutely modern font family inspired by his doctoral research on Romanesque type in 11th and 12th century Europe. Capital inscriptions are the basis for this face, which can be seen in its short, thorn-like serifs and flared forms. Alverata also brings in secondary considerations from the early 20th century model, but tweaks them to prevent blandness and imitation.
