Sculptural Bree

“I am a sculptor, mainly a sculptor,” Anton Hart says of his work. “And I work digitally, so most of my work is created on the computer, and then sent to various manufacturers to be produced into works,” Hart explains.

For his series ‘Standing Songs,’ Hart worked with the poet Jenny Bornholdt to combine design with language in the form of totems. Hart, who previously worked as a graphic designer, sets Bornholdt’s words vertically in Bree, then spins them around an axis to create a three-dimensional totem, but one where he reveals the text as a cutaway.

“It’s kind of weird, you know. It’s a very simple thing, the profile of a letter, because that's what I’m dealing with,” he explains. “I’m dealing with the outside of the letterforms. But there is such a massive variation across typefaces, and Bree just seemed to have the right amount of forms, curves, angles that complemented the shapes of the totems.”

Once the word or words are chosen and designed, the file is sent to a manufacturer for 3-D printing, usually using a sand-based material or bronze.

“You’re definitely not used to looking at it this way. And it catches everybody out,” Hart explains. “The thing I love about them is that people don’t know what they’re looking at. The type is a section and the object that is a reveal. And I try not to reveal it too much.”
