This year our annual mentorship programme was renamed in honour of our late colleague Dr Gerard Unger. The Gerard Unger Scholarship was increased in scope, which the same could be said of the winning submission: a wide-ranging project by Florian Fecher. As an editorially focused type foundry, Florian’s work fit with our passion and the design has much promise. The team had a quick introductory video chat with Florian to congratulate him.

submissions

We want to thank every student who submitted their typefaces to the Gerard Unger Scholarship (previously named Typeface Publishing Incentive Programme), and also the teachers and tutors who have helped throughout the process. In this fifth edition, two more typefaces stood out:
1. Qutub News by Namrata Goyal, student at KABK. A serif and sans type system for Indian newspapers, including Devanagari, Latin, and Nastaliq.
2. Girandengo by Tania Chacana, Sergio Martins & Dominic Stanley, students at the University of Reading. A workhorse serif type family.

We received a total of 27 projects from 10 international universities and type programmes. The typefaces, balanced between serif and sans, all included the Latin script and in 15 occasions were accompanied by another script: Cyrillic (4), Greek (2), Bengali (1), Devanagari (1), Hebrew (1), Urdu (1), Arabic (4), and Chinese (1).
