KCAI Presentation and Critique

April 2018

Supporting education is in TypeTogether’s DNA. When possible, the team members share their time and expertise to support students in graphic design, typography, communication, and other fields tangential to type. Whether that occurs through presentations, mentorship, or events, each of the core team invests themselves in the lives of others

In the centre of the US is the renowned Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI), right in copywriter Joshua Farmer’s neighbourhood. For the past several years he has been invited to talk to the students and critique their work at various stages as they progress in the graphic design program. He has also taught the Principles of Typography class for the past two years.

In January Josh gave a presentation to both the seniors and the sophomore Typography 2 class, covering a wide range of topics related to design, type, and marketing. After the presentation and a time of looking through the type ephemera he brought, Professor Lisa Maione asked him to give an impromptu critique of the sophomore students’ current assignment: an assigned type specimen.

Josh helped them focus on a conceptual angle for their pieces and gave guidance on how to accomplish each required element, fielding questions and setting them straight about using metrics instead of optical kerning. It was a lot of information in only a few hours, but the students absorbed it well.
