The award-winning Islamica Magazine is widely regarded as the most respected and authoritative glossy English-language Muslim periodical in the world. Founded in 1992 at the London School of Economics, Islamica covers issues in religion, current affairs, Islamic finance, society, and the arts, bringing together leading voices from the diplomatic, political, religious, academic, media, professional and artistic world. It is a “must-read” for all thought leaders on Muslim affairs.
The redesign is enforcing their authority on the subject. It was decided to use
Karmina as text typeface and to
redesign their bodoni-style
logotype. We were asked to develop something more humanistic with classical proportions that would reflect the magazine's reputation.
The proplematic letter combinations LA and AM were solved by a stronger tilt on L's serif and a fluid connection between the AM serifs. The rather unusual serif on the bottom of the C comes from the client's brief to avoid any visual connection to the Islamic halfmoon symbol.
